Brainstorm Your Business to Build a Strong Plan - Get Business Coaching and Free Resources
A lot of work goes into building a business, starting with coming up with a strong business idea that solves a problem.
Becoming a business owner is a worthy goal for anyone dedicated to the hard work and extensive steps involved. But before you launch a business, you must know if there’s any way to make money.
Brainstorm your business idea and do market research to find out if there’s a need for what you want to offer. My brand focuses on helping stay-at-home moms discover the business of their dreams, doing what they love.
In the twenty years that I’ve juggled freelance work with trying to make money at home, I’ve done a lot of random jobs for minimal payment. I’ve pitched and pleaded until my fingers bleed and waded through one rejection after another as a freelance writer.
A million different roles mean unlimited ways I can help others find success without the pitfalls associated with the struggles of freelancing.
I’ve followed the advice and playlist of dozens of experts. I’m well acquainted with the feeling of imposter syndrome. And what I’ve learned is that what works for everyone else isn’t what works for me.
When researching a topic, you often encounter contradictory information. That doesn’t always mean one way is right or wrong. It usually means people have different opinions based on their unique experiences.
Take boiling an egg, for example. I’m a genius in the kitchen. I’m in my “I can make that” phase, and it’s been fun. It’s incredible how many things are easy to cook from scratch rather than store-bought ingredients.
But while I can make bread from scratch (who’s done sourdough, ‘cause I might need to pick your brain), I struggle greatly at getting consistently boiled eggs.
Unlike making tortillas, bread, or chili, which I can do from memory and instinct, I still have to look up the exact instructions for boiling an egg. I do it a few times a month for nearly 20 years, yet I get varying results every time.
Tonight, I finally identified the reason. It’s because I haven’t been consistent with my plan. Sometimes, I add the eggs to cold water and heat them to a boil. Other times, I try boiling the water first and then adding the eggs.
Which process is right? I tried both during dinner to finally perfect it so I could add the recipe to our family cookbook. Does anyone else have kids who love to cook and want all the family’s secret meals? You can check out my blank cookbook templates in the store.
While doing the egg experiment, I also prepped some meals for the rest of the week while putting together our giant salad for tonight’s dinner. It’s always a relief to me when I have enough energy to tackle my to-do list, especially when it reduces the work I have to do later on.
My findings? I got better results with my hardboiled eggs by adding them cold out of the fridge into a pot, then cold salted water and bringing it to a boil. Then, I turned the temperature to a low simmer.
The other method gave me soft-boiled eggs, which the dogs enjoyed as dinner snacks. The rest were chopped up for the rice, chicken, and veggies meal I’ll make for them tomorrow. If you want to give your pups home-cooked meals, check out this recipe book.
My business feels a lot like those eggs. I pulled some projects out of the fire before they were ready, and they became mushy and unappetizing. But the ones I forgot about while doing other things were the perfect addition to what I spent most of my time on.
Two years ago, I started the journey of an online store and an email list. But then I got sidetracked. This year, I’ve doubled down on my efforts and threw in the challenge of growing a paid Substack newsletter.
My entire focus? Helping stay-at-home moms build the business of their dreams, even if it’s just a side hustle of passive income. I’d love to say it’s easy, but you have to put in some serious work to start your business. And a bit of work afterward to maintain it.

Do you have a business idea but don’t know if it’s viable? Brainstorm your business with these five tips.
1. Start With Your Why 🔥
Why do you want to start this business? Is it to be your own boss? 🌟 To offer a unique product or service? Or maybe you want the flexibility to work from home and set your own schedule (no shame!). Pinpointing your why will guide the direction of your business model.
💡 Pro Tip: This will help you stay motivated when things get tough. Remember your mission!
2. Define Your Audience 👥
Who are you serving? Knowing your ideal customer is CRUCIAL when figuring out your business model. Are you serving stay-at-home moms who want to run their own businesses? Or busy professionals looking for time-saving products? Defining your target audience will help you choose the right revenue model, marketing strategies, and sales approach. 🔍
💡 Pro Tip: Create a customer persona to picture your ideal client in detail—name, age, interests, pain points, etc.
3. Consider the Revenue Streams 💵
A big part of choosing your business model is deciding how you'll make money. Will it be through product sales? Services? Affiliate marketing? Or maybe subscriptions or memberships? 💰 The possibilities are endless, but you need to pick the stream that aligns best with what you're offering and your audience’s needs.
💡 Pro Tip: Test out different revenue streams with small-scale offers to see what works best for you and your audience.
4. Assess the Workload & Lifestyle 🧘♀️
How do you want your day-to-day to look? Are you aiming for something that lets you travel more? Or do you love the idea of running a tight ship with set hours? 🤔 Some business models, like eCommerce stores or content creation, might require a lot of upfront work but have more passive income later on. Others, like coaching or freelancing, may give you more flexibility but demand time and energy for each client.
💡 Pro Tip: Think about your work-life balance and how much energy you want to put into your biz. You want to love what you do, not feel drained!

5. Research & Refine 🧐
Sometimes, the best way to figure out your business model is to do some digging. Look at competitors. What’s working for them? What could be improved? What do YOU do differently that would attract your audience? You don’t have to reinvent the wheel—but you can definitely put your spin on things. 🔄
💡 Pro Tip: Don’t be afraid to pivot if your first model doesn’t fit. Businesses evolve, and that’s a GOOD thing! 💯
